Who is Mel Fisher?
Mel Fisher is a dreamer, a legend and one of the world’s greatest treasure hunters. In 1985, Mel discovered the treasures ($200- $400 million in gold and silver) from the Atocha and Santa Margarita, Spanish galleons that sank during a hurricane on September 6, 1622, near Key West. To share his discoveries to the world, he founded the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society, a place where people can marvel at the treasures he recovered and the triumph of the human spirit.

What can you see at the Mel Fisher Museum?
The Mel Fisher Museum features fascinating exhibits, artifacts, and treasures from 17th century shipwrecks off Key West, including the Atocha and Henrietta Marie. See gold, silver bars, coins and jewels from the NuestraSeñora de Atochaand Santa Margarita - the Spanish galleons of 1622 that sank on their journey from Havana to Spain. Marvel at artifacts recovered from the English merchant-slaver Henrietta Marie that sank in 35 miles west of Key West in 1700, and the remains of the St. John's Bahamas wreck, a mid-16th century Spanish ship and one of the richest archaeological finds for examining the European colonization of the Americas.
